Google Nexus One - front view....

Yesterday the software giant Google launched a new Android phone called the Google Nexus One. Made by the taiwanese company HTC, the Nexus One claims to belong for a new category of mobile phones called "smartphones". Although the new phone is better in specs than previous Android phones launched in reality it doesn't really seem to be a technical breakthrough as the iPhone was when first presented. Sure, it has a 5MP camera, a 1Ghz processor, support for MicroSD cards up to 32 GB and a gorgous screen the phone also lacks multitouch, at least for the moment and a physical keyboard (future models with same specs might have it). The real interesting thing that happend with the launch of the phone is that Google has made its own store where the Android phones can be sold and that you can buy the phone from the store either free or with a contract. At the moment the phone is available just in the US and a few other countries but as Google will make new partnerships with telecom providers the phone will be gradually available in many more countries. Google claims that the profit margins for Google on each unit sold is very low and that the real win is in the Google software provided with the phone. One very interesting app that can be used on the new Android phone (Android version 2.2 - so even newer than the Motorola Droid / Milestone) is the Google Earth app.

For the moment i'm glad that Google has managed to unite developers and companies to make competing products against Apple and i'm a little concerned about Nokia who is lagging behind with its Symbian OS.
